We have been building since 2009 and we specify differently for coastal jobs than inland ones. Timber cladding facing the sea at Ballygally will need attention within a few years; the same board inland will last far longer. On exposed Larne sites we normally recommend composite for that reason, and we will say so even though it costs more up front.
Three things. Fixings and flashings need to resist wind uplift, not just look neat. Sealing around openings has to cope with rain driven horizontally rather than falling vertically. And insulation matters more because wind chill strips heat from a poorly detailed building far faster than still air does. None of this is visible in a photograph, which is why cheap coastal builds fail early.
